Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay grew up with her aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to become creative and inspired by the arts. The actress worked as a late night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she required during the working day to pursue her passion for the arts, literature and theater. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as an avenue for action. Her mother, too, was well-educated and encouraged that she could express her thoughts by using the arts. DuVernay was born together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. When she was still an undergraduate student DuVernay was interested in creating in the broadcast media. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury. She was also asked to take a look at their trash. Her duties left her unhappy by journalism and she chose to pursue a career in the public relations sector. DuVernay got a job right after graduating from college as an intern at the studio that was small. From this position she started her own PR company that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched a number of networks for promotion and lifestyle that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
